Getting Married at St George’s Hall, Liverpool: A Photographer’s Guide

October 29, 2026

St George’s Hall is one of Liverpool’s most impressive buildings, and getting married there feels genuinely special. It’s a Grade I listed neoclassical hall right in the city centre, opposite Lime Street station. I photographed Samantha & James’s wedding here, and it’s a venue I’d love to return to.

Ceremony options at St George’s Hall

Liverpool Register Office is based at the southern end of St George’s Hall, so many couples choose one of its ceremony rooms:

  • The Grand Jury Room – wood-panelled, for up to around 70 guests.
  • The Sefton Room – overlooks St John’s Gardens, for up to around 50 guests.
  • Statutory ceremonies – a small, simple ceremony with just a few guests.

For something grander, the hall’s larger spaces can also be hired – including the barrel-vaulted Great Hall, with its marble columns, chandeliers and huge pipe organ, and the circular Concert Room, which Charles Dickens reportedly called “the most perfect room in the world”. If you book one of these, you’ll still need to arrange a registrar through the register office.

The best photo spots

  • The front steps and columns. The classical columns make a dramatic backdrop for confetti and group photos.
  • St John’s Gardens. Just behind the hall, with greenery and statues – great for relaxed couple portraits.
  • Inside the hall. If your booking allows, the tiled floors, corridors and doorways are stunning.
  • Nearby streets. William Brown Street and the surrounding buildings give a grand, city feel.

Practical tips

  • Arrive early. The register office asks you and your guests to arrive at least 20 minutes before your ceremony.
  • Stagger arrivals if you don’t want to see each other beforehand.
  • Plan family photos outside. The steps work brilliantly, so give me your list in advance.
  • Think about the weather. It’s an exposed spot – have a plan if it’s windy or wet.

Which package suits a St George’s Hall wedding?

If you’re having a ceremony at the hall and a reception elsewhere in the city, a half-day package often covers everything. If you want getting ready, the ceremony and the evening party, full-day coverage is the way to go.

Check the latest room details with Liverpool Register Office or Liverpool City Halls, as arrangements can change.
