Southport Town Hall is one of the prettiest places in the area for a civil ceremony. It sits right on Lord Street, and its grand white front with a double stone staircase is made for wedding photos. I photographed Adam & Shaz’s wedding here, and it’s a venue I always enjoy.
A little history
The town hall was built in the early 1850s to a design by Thomas Withnell. It’s a Grade II listed Palladian building, with Doric columns at the porch and sculptures of Justice, Mercy and Truth in the pediment above the entrance.
Ceremony rooms
Sefton Council’s ceremonies team offers two rooms at Southport Town Hall:
- The Council Chamber – for up to around 60 guests.
- The Ante Room – a smaller room for up to around 20 guests.
Ceremonies run on weekdays and Saturday mornings. Saturday slots are limited, so if you’ve got your heart set on one, contact the ceremonies team before you confirm a date anywhere else.
The best photo spots
- The front steps. The double staircase is perfect for confetti and big group photos.
- Lord Street. The tree-lined boulevard and Victorian shop canopies are a beautiful backdrop for couple portraits.
- The Lord Street gardens. A little greenery right on your doorstep.
- The seafront and pier are a short drive away if you’d like a seaside feel.
Tips for your day
- Morning ceremony? Saturday slots are in the morning, so think about a long lunch or afternoon reception afterwards.
- Bring confetti – but check with the ceremonies team where it’s allowed.
- Plan your groups. Lord Street is busy, so having a family photo list ready keeps things quick. My family photo list template will help.
- Short and sweet coverage. If you’re having a small ceremony and meal, my ceremony-only or half-day packages may be all you need.
